Lining and Earflaps

Note: The earflaps are worked in short rows, with the remaining sts left on the needle.

Work 20 rnds in stockinette st. Begin working the first earflap as follows: P8 (9, 12), K23 (27, 29), turn.
Next Row: P23 (27, 29), turn.
Next Row: K22 (26, 28), turn.
Continue working short rows, working 1 less stitch on each row, until 4 knit stitches remain.
Next Row:  P4, turn.
Next Row: K5, turn.
Continue in rows working 1 more stitch at the end of each row, ending last row with K23 (25, 27).  First earflap is complete.
Continuing on, P33 (35, 37), K23 (27, 29), turn.
Work second earflap the same as first earflap on 23 (27, 29) sts just worked.
Continuing on, P9 (10, 13) to the end of rnd.
Note: When working hat in one color, work a total of 24 rnds in rib pattern.
Change to 4.0 mm circular needle, and begin rib pattern  as follows:
Rnd 1: *K1, P1; repeat from * to end of rnd.
Rnd 2: *Knit into stitch below, P1; repeat from * to end of rnd.

Work 4 rnds in rib pattern, change to CC, knit 1 rnd. Starting with Rnd 2, work 15 more rnds in rib pattern.. Change to MC, knit 1 rnd.  Starting with Rnd 2 work 3 more rnds in rib pattern.

Joining the lining

Carefully pull out crochet cast-on, picking up 96 (108, 120) live sts with 3.5 mm needle. Fold wrong sides of hat together, with RS of ribbing facing out. With 4.0 mm needle, knit together 1 st from each needle. Continue in this manner until all sts have been knit together. 96 (108, 120) sts on needle.

Work in stockinette st, until hat measures approximately 4 (4 ¼, 5) inches above ribbing or desired length to crown.

Shape Crown

Note: Change to double pointed needles, when there are no longer enough stitches to work on circular needle.
Next Rnd: K8 (9, 10), place decrease marker, *K16 (18, 20), place decrease marker; repeat from * 4 more times, K8 (9, 10).
Rnd 1 and all odd numbered rnds: *K to 2 sts before decease marker, K2tog; repeat from * 5 more times, K to end of rnd. 90 (102, 114) sts on needle.
Rnd 2 and all even numbered rnds: Knit.

Repeat Rnds 1 & 2 until 12 sts remain. Cut yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail. Using tapestry needle, draw the tail through the remaining sts, fasten off.
