Brick Stitch pattern is worked through the main portion of the stole. Rows are worked in reverse St st. and every 6th st (the CC st) is slipped and pulled up from a previous row, to create the brick effect.
Beginning with Row 2, the 3 center sts will be purled on all Wrong Side Rows (WS)
Beg with Row 3, all RS Rows will be worked in pattern to 2 sts before center st, K2tog, K1 (center st) SSK.
Instructions
Using MC, cast on 281 stitches.
Row 1: Knit
Row 2 (WS): K 139, P1, place marker, P1 (center stitch, pm, P1, K139
Row 3 (RS): Purl to 2 sts, before center st, K2tog, slip marker, K1, slm, SSK, purl to end of row (2 sts decr’d).
Row 4 (WS): Knit to 1 st. before center st, P1, slm, P1 slm, P1, knit to the end of the row.
Row 5 (RS): Knit to 2 sts. Before center st, K2tog, slm, K1, slm, SSK, knit to end of the row.
Row 6 (WS): Purl to the last st
Row 7 (RS): Knit to 2 sts. before center st, K2tog, slm, K1, slm, SSK, knit to end of the row.
Rows 8-10: Repeat Rows 2-4. You now have 2 purled “bumps” on the RS (273 sts remain).
Change to CC (do not cut MC) and begin Brick Stitch:
Row 11 (RS): Knit to 2 sts. Before center st, K2tog, slm, K1, slm, SSK, knit to end of the row.
Row 12 (WS): Purl to the last st
Row 13 (RS): Change to MC. *K5, slip stitch purlwise* to 2 sts. before center st, K2tog, K1, SSK, *K5, bring yarn forward, slip CC stitch purlwise, yarn back* to 1 st. before center P3, *K5, slip stitch purlwise* to the end of the row.
Row 14 (WS): *K5, bring yarn forward, slp CC stitch purlwise, yarn back* to 1 st. before center P3, *K5, bring yarn forward, slip CC stitch purlwise, yarn back* to end of the row.
Row 15 (RS): Purl (bring yarn back, slip CC sts., yarn front) to 2 sts. Before center, K2tog, K1, SSK, purl & slip CC sts. to the end of the row.
Row 16 (WS): Knit & slip CC sts to 1 st. before center, P3, knit & slip CC st. to the end of the row.
Rows 17-40: repeat Rows 11-16, four times.
At the first repeat, on row 13 (actually Row 19 and again on Row 31), you’ll want to K2, slip stitch, *K5, slip stitch* to 2 sts. before center, K2tog, K1, SSK, *K5, slip stitch purlwise* this allows for the alternating look of the brick as you continue the pattern.
Finish Brick stitch pattern
Row 41 (RS): Change to CC. Knit to 2 sts. before center st, K2tog, K1, SSk, knit to end of the row.
Row 42 (WS): Purl across the row. Break CC yarn, leaving a long tail.
Row 43 (RS): Change to MC. Knit to 2 sts. before center st, K2tog, K1, SSK, knit to end of the row.
Rows 44-52: repeat Rows 2-10. This gives you two purled “bumps”.
Change to CC, K across row.
Next row work an I-cord bind off: *K2, SSK, slip those 3 stitches from the right needle back onto the left needle* across the row. Cut yarn.
Ruffles
Work each edge separately.
Short edges
With circ ndl, pick up 27 sts (multiple of 4 + 3).
*K3, P1* across the row, end with K3.
*P3, YO, K1, Yo* across the row, end with P3.
*K3, P3* across the row, end with K3.
*P3, YO, K3, YO* across the row, end with P3.
*K3, P5* across the row, end with K3.
Long edge pick up 279 sts. (multiple of 4 + 3) Work Rows 1-5 as for Short Edge. BO all sts leaving a long tail.
Finishing
Sew edges of ruffles together at corners. Weave in all ends. Wash in warm water with gentle shampoo, rinse. Roll in a towel to gently press out water. Lay flat to dry.
