For millennia, silk has been prized as a luxury fiber for its softness, sheen, and strength. If you love silk yarn but can't afford to buy it, spinning silk is an economical way to work with this deluxe fiber.
Silk is a filament extruded from the cocoon of various species of caterpillars. We sell fibers from the domesticated Bombyx mori and the wild Tussah and Samia (Eri). Its thermal properties make it ideal for all seasons, warm in winter and cool in summer.
Silk's long staple length and extreme fineness that may require you to change from your comfort spinning mode and try a few new techniques. For worsted spinning, you may need to hold your hands a bit farther apart than you are used to. Some spinners like spinning silk from the fold, a good technique for long-stapled fibers.
